Reading was never fun to me until I got infatuated by my first novel reading few years ago. Now, I sometimes find myself struck in the fictional world sinking into plots of stories.
This is my first fiction book review. It’s called “Fan Girl” by Rainbow Rowell. I had heard a lot about Rowell’s bestseller “Eleanor & Park” and positive reviews about the novel. However, I decided to lift Fan Girl for reading instead because I want to explore the writing of the author not her fame.
Fan Girl is about a girl, Kath, who is a loyal fan to Simon Snow, a fictional character who was created in the story. Using Simon Snow Character, Cath has put Simon in her own fictional world and settings. The novel follows Cath’s life being attached to Wren, her twin sister, her relationship with her workaholic father and her introvert life as a first year student at a university. The story also explores a typical journey of teenage love and school problems.
I give the book 7 out of 10. It’s very funny to see the down-to-earth relation between a father and a daughter and hilarious to a normal and typical teenage love progression. It might fit the taste of many teenagers.
However, I was distracted every time Cath talks or recites her writing about Simon Snow, the in-the-book-fictional-character. Maybe this is why I give this novel a 7 not an 8 point. I got lost and taken out of the story as I couldn’t relate this fictional character.
